LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE
The Department of Library and Information Science offers a Ph. D. programme based on a combination of coursework and research to suit the needs of students with a variety of academic backgrounds.
The coursework is designed to provide students with a strong foundation for the research portion of the programme and is meant to prepare the student to conduct a meaningful, original and extensive research project. Students may be exempted from up to maximum of 12 credit hours of courses depending on their advanced academic standing, previous research, and experience.

The programme is designed to produce mature individuals who are widely read, knowledgeable, and competent in analytical skills to meet academic, professional and civilizational needs. The programme offers a rich mix of international experience and resources to aspiring scholars.
The Ph.D. programme consists of the following three elements, each of which is described in detail below.

Courses will be divided into two segments, i.e., required and specialization courses.
All students must take and pass the required courses and select courses from the specialization segment according to their need for specialization.
The students must maintain a CGPA of 3.00 and above to remain in good standing.
Students may be exempted from up to a maximum of 12 credit hours of courses depending on their advanced academic standing, previous research, and experience. Applications for exemption must be made by the middle of the first semester of studies with justification and documentary evidence. Exemption will be approved by the KPGC on the recommendation of the DPGC.

LISC 7920 Survey Research Methods in Library and Information Science
or
LISC 7930 Qualitative Research Methods in Library and Information Science
LISC 7290 Seminar in Human Information Behaviour
LISC 7390 Seminar in Organization of Information Resources
Students will be required to choose up to four additional courses from the specialization segment depending on the exemption granted to each student based on advanced academic standing, experience, and need. The specialization courses are as follows:

LISC 7820 Organizational Development (OD) in Information Institutions
LISC 7890 Seminar in Measurement and Evaluation of Library and Information Services
LISC 7980 Seminar in Current Trends in Library and Information Science
LISC 7290 Seminar in Human Information Behaviour (3)Precursors to and characteristics of human information behaviour both within and outside of institutional information systems; Exploration of various contexts of information behaviour; Relations between such behaviour and information systems design and the relevant technologies; Review of research on different aspects of human information behaviour.
LISC 7380 Organization of Islamic Information (3)
Knowledge and information from an Islamic perspective; Delimitation of Islamic literature and its linguistic, geographic and chronological dispersal; Problems in the organization, retrieval and use of Islamic literature.
LISC 7390 Seminar in Organization of Information Resources (3)
Study of problems related to the organization of and access to information in print and non-print formats with emphasis on subject analysis, thesauri, indexing and use of codes; Discussion of issues of standardization, quality control, and bibliographic networks; Design, selection, maintenance and evaluation of systems for particular settings.
LISC 7410 Trends in Information Retrieval Systems (3)
Theories and methods for full-text and bibliographic information retrieval; Specifications and design principles for information retrieval systems and their implementation; Multimedia, hypertext, natural language and knowledge-based retrieval systems; Human-system interaction; Current research in information retrieval; Evaluation of information retrieval systems.
LISC 7450 Planning and Management of Library Automation Systems (3)
Definition of goals and objectives of a library automation system; Needs assessment and defining system functional requirements; Role of library automation consultants; Event scheduling and Gantt charts; RFQs and their evaluation; Contract negotiation and preparation; Site preparation and related aspects; System personnel management; System installation, testing and evaluation; System maintenance.
LISC 7810 Strategic Planning for Information Professionals (3)
Developing a mission statement; Environmental scanning; Situational analysis; Use of methodologies such as crystal ball techniques, morphological analysis, modeling techniques and extrapolator techniques; Life cycle of a strategic plan; Critical success factors; Case studies of strategic planning in information institutions; Review of research on strategic planning in information institutions.
LISC 7820 Organizational Development (OD) in Information Institutions (3)
Characteristics and foundations of the OD process; OD interventions: team interventions; intergroup interventions; structural interventions; Action research and organizational development; Systems ramifications; Issues in consultant-client relationship; Power, politics and organizational development; Review of research in organizational development in information institutions.
LISC 7890 Seminar in Measurement and Evaluation of Library and Information Services (3)
Evaluation concepts, models and methods; Evaluation criteria; Quantitative approaches for evaluation of library services and resources; Designing and conducting evaluative investigations and field experiments; Barriers to evaluation research; Problems related to measurement and evaluation studies in developing countries.
LISC 7910 Statistics for Library and Information Professionals (3)
Descriptive statistics; Tests of difference (parametric and non-parametric); Tests of association (parametric and non-parametric); multivariate statistics such as ANOVA, factorial ANOVA, MANOVA, multiple regression analysis, factor analysis; Software programmes such as SPSS and SAS; Analysis of a data set.
LISC 7920 Survey Research Methods in Library and Information Science (3)
Role of research in theory building; Discussion of the scientific method; Problem definition in the theoretical context; Research design, conceptualization, operationalization, and measurement; Quantitative techniques for data collection and analysis; Examination of selected research studies to illustrate the quantitative research process; Development of a research proposal relating to student’s dissertation topic.
LISC 7930 Qualitative Research Methods in Library and Information Science (3)
Theory and philosophy of naturalistic inquiry; Various modes of qualitative inquiry such as ethnography, grounded theory, depth interviews, focus group interviews, discourse analysis and phenomenology; Techniques of analyzing qualitative data; Issues of validity and generalizability of qualitative findings; Critical examination of major qualitative research studies in LIS; Development of a research proposal relating to students dissertation topic.
LISC 7980 Seminar in Current Trends in Library and Information Science (3)
This course will be conducted on an independent study basis to meet the specific needs of individual students in specialized areas which are not covered by the structured course-work. The focus will be on extensive guided reading and discussion of current trends and issues. The course will end with a project paper.
