MASTER IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE
(MLIS)

Masters

 

The Master in Library and Information Science (MLIS) programme, the first such programme in Malaysia, was begun in 1992 aiming at producing future professionals who can meet the diverse needs of the information market. It can also be pursued on part-time basis by taking courses in the evenings and over the weekend. Working librarians who wish to enhance their competence in any particular area can take individual courses based on their need.

Admission Requirements

  1. A good bachelor's Degree from any academic institutions recognized by the Malaysian Public Service Department (JPA) with a second class upper or equivalent.

  2. A postgraduate diploma in library and information science recognized by the Malaysian Public Service Department (JPA).

  3. English language proficiency at advanced level as determined by the IIUM Language Assessment Test or at least TOEFL 550 (paper based) or IELTS 6.

Programme Structure for MLIS

The programme requires the completion of 36 credit hours of graduate coursework as detailed below:

Students taking non-thesis option will have to pass a Comprehensive Examination. Candidates having previous postgraduate qualifications in LIS can apply for transfer of credit up to 12 hours of coursework. Working librarians are exempted from fieldwork.

DEGREE  REQUIREMENTS

In order to receive a Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), students must satisfy the following requirements:

Earn 36 credit hours by taking core and elective courses at IIUM or through transfer of credit or substitutions allowed by the University.

Complete a fieldwork of 3 credit hours in 21 days satisfactorily with an organisation approved by the Department. Students with a minimum of two years of professional experience may be exempted from this requirement.

Maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.0.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

IRKH 6035 Studies in Islamic Heritage (3)

Development of Islamic Heritage and Civilization throughout the centuries from the time of Prophet until now, by focusing more on the subjects of Islamic Literatures. It also combines the aspect of Islamic Studies and conceptual elements of Library and Information Science. Combination between theoretical aspects dealing with Islamic Heritage and Literatures with practical skill in managing the information.

LISC 6040 Information Sources and Services (3)

Philosophy, principles and functions of reference work; study and application of primary information sources, i.e., monographs, journal articles, technical reports, government publications, and patents; study and application of secondary information sources; i.e., dictionaries, encyclopedias, yearbooks, almanacs, handbooks, directories, biographical and geographical sources; basic concepts of reference transaction including reference interview and search strategies.

LISC 6050 Information Resources Development (3)

Principles and objectives of collection development; community analysis; collection development policy, organization of collection development operations; role and functions of collection development librarian; study of bibliographic selection sources/tools. management of acquisition work: monographs, serials, non-print materials; acquisition from muslim world; application of information technology to collection development.

LISC 6070 Management of Information Institutions (3)

Major management functions such as planning, organizing, monitoring & controlling, quality assurance, budgeting, evaluating, and appraisal will be discussed in detail. Student will be exposed to management concepts, theories and tools and its application to different types of information institutions. Proper utilization and development of human resources as human capitals for the achievement of organizational goals.

LISC 6110 Advanced Reference and Information Services (3)

Information needs and use patterns; reference services in online environment, i.e., expert system applications, online searching, CD-ROM, OPAC, design and conduct of user education programmes; document delivery services; review of major use and user studies.

LISC 6120 Information Analysis and Organisation-I (3)

Introduce to principles, standards, tools and functions of cataloging, indexes, bibliographic utilities and other organizing entities. They will learn the techniques of classifying monographs using Library of Congress Classification Schemes.

LISC 6121 Information Analysis and Organisation-2 (3)

Working with the basic tolls of cataloging, including Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition 1998 revision (AACR2r), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and the Library of Congress Classification (LCC). Emerging issues in the organization of electronic resources will also be discussed. Students will conduct produce a state of the art report on a specific topic in bibliographic control

LISC 6130 Indexing and Abstracting (3)

Historical background and basic concepts of indexing and abstracting; different types and forms of indexes; indexing languages, vocabulary control and authority lists; guidelines and rules for indexing; indexing by format and subject.

LISC 6135 Records and Archives Management (3)

Definition and scope of archives and records management; record management: concepts and principles; types of archives: institutional archives, business archives, legislative archives, public archives, etc.

LISC 6151 Marketing of Information Services (3)

Marketing strategy, segmentation and the marketing mix is covered followed by implementation, monitoring and control. A marketing model for libraries is discussed together with applications to a library environment.

LISC 6170 Measurement and Evaluation (3)

Basic concepts of measurement and evaluation; performance indicators, measures of input and output; quantitative approaches for evaluation of library services and resources; procedures and techniques used in the conduct of an evaluation study; major areas and review of important studies in evaluation research; barriers to evaluation research; problems related to measurement and evaluation studies in Malaysia.

LISC 6180 Information Storage and Retrieval (3)

Basic concepts of information storage and retrieval; different types of IR systems; documents and forms of representation; retrieval techniques; output presentation; relevance-feedback; effectiveness measure; evaluation of IR systems; user-system interaction; intelligent IR systems; future trend of the IR systems, and Islamic principles related to IR systems.

LISC 6181 Bibliometrics (3)

Basic concepts and theories of quantitative analysis of scholarly information; study and application of bibliometric laws, i.e., Zipf, Bradford, Lotka, study and application of bibliometric techniques of citation analysis; cogitation analysis, contextual analysis and bibliographic coupling; study of dispersion and scattering, obsolesce and half lives of scientific information; use of Bibliometrics analysis in decision making for information resource development, management services.

LISC 6194 Planning of Library and Information Systems and Services (3)

Need and importance of planning in libraries; basic concepts, levels (national, regional, institutional); strategic planning: concepts, strategies, procedures; short-term planning: concepts, instruments, techniques; planning process, models and techniques.

LISC 6198 Publishing and Marketing of Information Resources (3)

Exposed to various types of publishing and information resources with special emphasis on electronic and web-based publishing. Design and evaluate some of these types of publications. Various issues in publishing as economic issues, intellectual property, copyright and publication in the Islamic world are also covered.

LISC 6260 Web-based Information Design and Development (3)

The Internet technology will be studied as well current issues related to its impact on information centers and libraries. Particular emphasis will be given on evaluation on web search engines, webliographies, web resources for library, web design, the application of concepts of content management system in the web-based system and other hands-on training on HTML, XML and WYSWYG applications (Front Page and Dreamweaver). 

LISC 6294 Information Sources and Services in Business (3)

Fundamental understanding of the concept of information applied in organizations, and the importance of information management and the identification sources and services utilized to acquire information for their decision making advantage. The course also provide basic introduction to how business operates as well as organizational communication in understanding how an organization seeks and uses information.

LISC 6410 Information Processing and Database Development (3)

The organization of information and the use of database management systems (DBMS) to solve a wide range of information storage, management, and retrieval problems in organizations ranging from large corporations to personal applications. The course combines practical aspects of DBMS use with theoretical discussions of database design, operation, and implementation. Students will use the INMAGIC database management system package for class exercise.

LISC 6420 Management of Automated Systems (3)

Definition, theories, concepts, approaches and research on digital libraries; studies of digital library initiatives in advances countries as well as those libraries in the region/Islamic countries.; processes involved in the digitization of projects; standards for the organization of digital resources such as metadata, Dublin Core, Object identifier, and best practices on the organization of digital resources; subscription to the digital publications and licensing

LISC 6440 Telecommunication and Networking (3)

Fundamentals elements in the networking that cover both conceptual elements and practical training in networking and telecommunication. Student will be exposed to the theoretical aspects related to computer networks and the Internet, application layer and local area network, multimedia networking, security in computer networking and network management .Then they will use specific toll to observe the related terminologies such as transmission of packets by using Konsole under Linux Platform 

LISC 6450 Application of Information Technology in Libraries (3)

The use of Information Technology as tool for the communication, storage, retrieval and manipulation of information. It emphasizes on media and computer technologies, including survey of historical department, contemporary applications, human and social implications and future directions. Student will be required to collect information about latest technologies to be discussed in the class, either from offline (physical worlds) or online sources.

LISC 6491 Use of Microcomputers in Libraries and Information Centres (3)

Use of microcomputers in library and information work: office management, administrative support, housekeeping jobs and seminar/public presentation. Word processing: basic & advanced features of work processing packages. Graphics: basic capabilities of packages. Spreadsheets: data entry, formulae, generate charts. Database: comprehensive relational database application for data collection and retrieval. Web page editor: using Microsoft Front Page and Dreamweaver. Multimedia: Using Director 8.5 as an introductory course for students

LISC 6494 Audio-Visual and Multimedia Production and Use (3)

The principles of Multimedia and its application, with hands-on training using multimedia application: Macromedia Flash MX. Also will be trained to use other application such as Adobe Photoshop 6 and Macromedia Fireworks on image editing.

LISC 6495 Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems (3)

Basic concepts and principles of artificial intelligence; relationship of artificial intelligence with expert systems; current approaches to computer-based knowledge representation and inferences; expert system development; guidelines, rules and processes for construction of a prototype system; programming language (e.g PROLOG) and "Shell" used in designing and expert system; applications of expert systems in information services.

LISC 6900 Research Methods in Library and lnformation Science (3)

Introduce students to the significant of research, common languages used in research, and the ethical issues involved. This course also equips students with various methods available in the field of Library and Information Science
